The 7th Sense…Navigating Life by the Mind of Christ

There really are two parallel “universes”…one is Seen and the other is Unseen. These are two separate realities existing side-by-side in your life. The first “universe” is the natural world in which the FIVE basic senses rule: seeing, hearing, touching, smelling and tasting. The other is the realm of the supernatural…the unseen world of God, angels and evil spirits. Interestingly, scientists and psychologists even speak of a SIXTH sense…the uncanny human ability to detect a reality beyond what is perceptible to the five senses. Some consider this the subconscious mind or soul. Tragically, a fixation on this sixth sense produces fear, superstitions or even fatal attractions to evil influences.

However, there’s another sense of perception that I believe all Christians possess. I call it the SEVENTH sense…the ability to sense (to discern) the presence of God at work in your life and in the world around you. I believe this 7th sense is, in reality, the Mind of Christ (1 Cor. 2:9-16). And how do I know you have this sense? Because, as a Christian, you have the Holy Spirit living within you. It is He who discloses the thoughts and intentions of Christ to you (John 16:13-14).  When you align your mind with the way God thinks and reasons, here’s what will happen:

1.    You’ll Know Who You Really Are. At long last you’ll have the answer to the question…Who am I and Why do I exist? Because of Jesus, you’re at peace with God and yourself. You’ll sense His gentle mind saying, “I love you; you are my child and I have a wonderful purpose for your life.”  (1 John 3:1-2)

2.    You’ll Have Peace and Confidence in the Midst of the Storm. When you walk daily with Jesus, He is with you even in the storms of life. Regardless of what you’re going through, you’ll sense His reassuring presence calming your heart, “Be still and know that I am God!” (Ps. 46:10)

3.    You’ll Learn to Intercede for Others. When the Spirit of Jesus dwells in you, you’ll sense His heart and mind interceding for others (Heb. 7:25). You’ll begin to feel His burden for people in trouble who call out to Him. Then you’ll find yourself praying for people you don’t even know!

4.    You’ll Never Again Be Anxious About What You Don’t Have. In 1943 a psychologist named Maslow developed a hierarchy of human needs ranging from the lowest (air/food/water, security, love/belonging) to the highest (self-esteem and self-actualization). His premise was that unless you satisfy the lower needs, you’ll never achieve the higher ones. Apparently Maslow never met Jesus! If he had, he would have known that the Mind of Christ totally reverses his logic. According to Jesus, when you seek first God’s rule in your life (His Kingdom) and His righteousness, all the other things you need are added to you (Matt. 6:31-33). When you think like God thinks, He turns your Anxiety into Assurance. You’ll never go lacking when you put God first in your life.

So…How Do You Navigate Life with the Mind of Christ?
1.    Revisit your personal relationship with the Lord and reconfirm your identity in Christ.
2.    Refuse worry and fear! Don’t give it a place in your life! Instead, trust in God’s provisions.
3.    Face every challenging situation and make decisions with confidence in God and His Word.
4.    Ask God to work with you WHILE you do the things you know you’re supposed to do.

The Mind of Christ is infinitely better than any American Express card…Never leave home without it!
