Navigating Life by a Mother’s Love

“Life!” That was the name Adam gave to his wife, the first woman ever created by God. Translated into the English language, her name becomes, “Eve.” It interests me that her name was given AFTER the fall of our first parents into spiritual death (Gen. 3:20). “Life” is the opposite of death. “Life” is a beacon of hope mounted atop a strong tower that warns and directs a ship’s captain to navigate away from dangerous coastlines, hazardous reefs and tragic endings. Brilliantly shining through fog and storm, beacons of “Life” have saved myriads of crews, cargos and ships…if they took heed to the warnings.

That, my friend, is who a mother is and should be. It’s not so much the words she speaks as it is the look in her eyes, the tone of her voice and the wisdom of her character that directs a child’s path. Don’t ever think you can outgrow the need of a mother in your life. Whether she is a natural or a spiritual mother, her love is a light of “Life” that God gives to direct your ship. Here’s how it works:

1.    A Mother’s Love is More Than Human Love. God breathed His very image and likeness (His nature and character) into our first parents. Regardless of the sinful path they took, God preserved a seed of divine character in them as a light for the next generation. Don’t think that a mother’s tenacious love is just human. That is God’s love and life shining through her. Whether your mother is alive or not, you can still navigate your life by the light God deposited in her.

2.    A Mother’s Love is God’s Belief in You. It’s amazing that mothers never give up on their children. Regardless how much trouble they get into, a mother is quick to defend, restore and unconditionally love them. Where did that love come from? That’s God’s love reminding you of who you really are. Navigate toward that light and it’ll lead you to your divine destiny in Him.

3.    But a Mother’s Love is Also God’s Warnings to You. Don’t take lightly the warnings of a mother. They intuitively know when you’re going in the wrong direction. (Uncanny, isn’t it?) Where did they get that “extra set of eyes” in the back of their heads? Take heed, my friend, that’s God’s discernment. Navigate away from those waters and you’ll save your soul!

4.    A Mother’s Love is God’s Heritage for all Future Mothers. I asked my wife, Sheila, what was the most important thing she received from her mother. Without hesitation, she responded, “To love and take care of our children.” And that’s the way God intended you to navigate your life…one generation teaching the next…who in turn teaches the next (Titus 2:3-5).

And that’s how it happened. Out of the tragedy of human failure, God stirred Adam to name his wife, “Life.” And so she is today. But, you might ask, “What if my mother wasn’t as wonderful as God intended?” Then out of that tragedy of human failure, you can learn from her mistakes. Just like Eve, who was the mother of all living, your name can be changed from wife to “Life.”

For Sheila’s mother and my mother who are with the Lord now…and to all Moms and future Moms…Happy Mother’s Day!
